I Believe, You Receive

So what do you when you slip and fall and bruise your ribs from front to back?  Well, first you wallow in sorrow and pain.  And then, since no one likes to be around a wallower, you pull up your boot straps and deal with it.  For those of you who have been reading this blog for a while, you will remember the summer before last (wow, that's a lot of blog posts) when I fell off a folding chair and bruised my ribs on the left side.  I had been training pretty hard for multiple races and was forced to take 3 weeks off and...gasp....rest.  But not 'cross train' rest.  'Rib-healing' rest.  Translation: do nothing.  Zip.  Nada.  Because it hurt to do anything physical that involved movement; walking, sneezing, laughing...you name it.  In truth, I wallowed quite a bit during those 3 weeks.  But this time around, dear friends, I am not going to do that.  I am going to make the most of the situation.  Side note...do I think it's odd that I have fallen and bruised my ribs twice in less than two years?  Yes.  Yes I do.  Perhaps I'll revisit that in a another post.  This week, though, I will be healing with music.  My kids believe in Santa.  I believe in the power of music.  It is the gift that keeps on giving.  The ultimate spirit lifter.  It makes the party...or makes the party better.  It puts a smile on our faces.  It brings us to our feet.  It moves us to dance or to run or both.   It never lets us down.  And it never stops blowing me away.  I believe in music.  And, I also believe in giving.  My thought today...why not close this year out with one final mega RWM giveaway?  I believe, you receive.  Yes, I have too much time on my hands and way too much energy. How does this involve you?  So glad you asked.  Read below and let the festivities begin!

Readers, runners, rockers, all of the above....I NEED YOUR HELP.  From now until the end of the year I will be compiling a BEST OF 2013 music list.  I want to hear from you.  What song or album knocked your socks off this year?  Moved you to cut a rug?  Pushed you to a PR?  Made you not want to get out of your car so you could keep listening (this happened to me today)?  Caused you to spontaneously hive-five a stranger?  And if none of those happened this year....well, first I'm so sorry.  And second, you still have three weeks to drum up something good to share with us.  I realize that we are all insanely busy right now and that time is limited, so I'm going to sweeten the deal a bit to try to hook you in here. You've got 3 shots to win.  One lucky dog will get a swanky new pair of Yurbuds Ironman Inspire Pro Earphones (retail value $59.99).  The best sport earphones out there.  Period.

Two other lucky ducks will win either a box of running related goodies from RUNNERBOX or a RUNNERBOX gift card which they can use to pick out the box of their choice (and there are several options).  BOOYAH!  Oh, and make it snappy because the first 10 people who comment will receive an RWM sticker from yours truly.  I know, it's MADNESS.  And if all of that doesn't get you excited and make you want to chime in, I don't know what will.

THE DETAILS:  Comment below or tweet your "best of" music choices to @runningwmusic. Yurbuds and RUNNERBOX winners will be picked via random.org on 12/27.  Please make sure I can reach you in some way, shape or form.  Contest is open to US residents only.  Many thanks to Yurbuds and RUNNERBOX for being awesome .  Good luck & rock on.

  2. I went to a small local bar on St. Patty's day this year after the Shamrock Shuffle of course and there was a local band playing Molly and the Danger Band, they were awesome! They covered an old folk song called Wagon Wheel and wouldn't you know it a few days later I am in my car and on comes Darius Rucker covering the same song! Loved and had it on my playlist all summer! Runner up is Counting Stars from One Republic.

  3. 18 months by Calvin Harris. I downloaded it for one song, and ended up loving the whole album. The beat helps push me along when I feel I can't do any more! Love it.

  5. Hi Rebecca! I've been following your blog for about a month now, and I love it. This is my new favorite place for finding new music I like and inspiration for getting out there for a run. I'm a Lexington High alum and ran XC and track from 2005-2009. Proud to say that I'm still running. Back then, I wasn't the fastest on the team and all those miles, hills and workouts felt just awful, but years later... I'm still running. And I appreciate it all so much in retrospect. I got a 15k race this Saturday in NYC!

Anyway, back on topic, the song that knocked my socks off in 2013 was Sparklers by Gemini Club. I first heard it while driving my friend's car to work last spring. At the time, I was working at a climbing gym in St. Louis, a place I love and call my second home. Being a poor college student, I often borrowed my friend's car to get there. A perk of this was my friend always has different great CD mixes loaded in her car, and I usually blast whatever is on them the whole ride. As I rounded the corner and the gym (a striking renovated old power plant) came into view, Sparklers came on and it just made a perfect moment. I got pumped to work that day. Now every time I hear it, it reminds me of driving through St. Louis on a fine spring day to one of my favorite places, energized and ready to go.

    Cheers!!
    Michelle

    1. Michelle,
So cool!! Thrilled that you found me. I'm assuming you know I coach over at LHS, or maybe that's how you stumbled on RWM? What a small world. I am over there for XC and the outdoor season if you ever want to stop by. ;)
Would be happy to throw an RWM sticker in the mail for you. Send me your address and I'll send it along this week.
Thanks again for reading and sharing.

  6. Love Love Love your blog. I have been reading for a month or so and have found some great music as a result of what you post.

Not sure if this is one of your links, but I can't stop listening to this song and it pushed me through mile 11 in my first half this year.

  7. Radioactive, but not the Imagine Dragons one, I love the one with Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling. Almost all of Fallout Boy's new album. For the best encouraging song Sara Bareilles' Brave and anything Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's :-) (gotta have a little Irish..LOL)

  10. For some reason, country is taking over my playlists (I think my impending Nashville trip has something to do with that): Miranda Lambert's Mama's Broken Heart, Trade Adkins Honky Tonk Badonkadonk, and Goodbye Earl by the Dixie Chicks.

  11. "Roar" by Katy Perry is my favorite song of the year. I love getting ready in the morning to it and running to it. It's just a great song that puts me in a great mood!

  12. My mix tapes bridge creativity with running and no event is without a carefully crafted soundtrack typically dominated by Desert Blues musicians, Australian psychedelics or new Cumbia. Tinariwen, Tame Impala, Pond, and Frente Cumbiero were all joined by the addition of Jagwar Ma and Bombino. It was Jagwar Ma's Howlin that logged the most miles with me this year and their song "What Love" must have been the most repeated.

    1. Thx for chiming in! Compiling this list now. Do you have specific albums by Tinariwen, Tame Impala, Pond, and Frente Cumbiero that you'd like to call out, or just the bands in general? Just want to make sure I'm representing your choices correctly!
